November 10 to December 31, 1864

November 10th, 1864. Camp 11th Pa Cav
They have been so busy he has scarcely had time to breathe. In camp it was Lincoln 34 and McClellan 4 for the election.

November 14th, 1864. Camp 11th Pa Cav
They have been very busy and there is no time for winter quarters or furloughs. He tells of his love for her. He sees by the papers and her letters that Lincoln has been re-elected and he hopes it is for the best.

November 21st, 1864. Camp 11th Pa Cav, Near Richmond VA
He sends a $50.00 note.

Butler's forces are now called the Army of the James and the 11th Pa. Cavalry has a big share of the duty.

He enjoys better health than he did at home and thanks God for his many blessings and the Great Mercy he has shown him by shielding and protecting him from all the bullets and shells of the enemy. He is really not religious or pious but just the same fellow that left Philadelphia over 3 years ago.

It is very cold at night on picket but they have managed to get along very well and with the help of God they will prosper in any type of weather.

He cannot get home for Christmas and there are no signs of moving from this place. He had hoped they would take Winter Quarters near Portsmouth so she could join him there but where they are now is hardly fit for women. He hopes to get home sometime this winter.

December 15th, 1864. Co E. 11th Pa Cav, Near Richmond VA
He is upset about Annie marrying a one-armed soldier and says she should pause.

There has been cold, sharp skirmishes and he tells her she cannot come for the winter. Sending a box for Christmas would be hard because he is a long ways from the Express office. It is hard to tell how he will spend Christmas.

December 31st, 1864. Co "E." 11th Pa Cavalry, Near Richmond VA
Brother William returns home. He says that "if the Rebels can not kill them before they capture them they try their best to do it afterwards". All the rest of the boys who were captured with him have died.

She has sent a box with gloves and he is much pleased with her gift.
