My Dear Wife
I received your Kind letter of the 2d and I was very glad to hear that you was still injoying good health as this leaves me at present. I have nothing new to send to night. i cannot get home for Christmas but i will get home sometime this winter if i have good luck. there is no sighns of us moving from this place yet and we may remain here this winter or the greater part of this winter. i did once think that we should winter at Portsmouth but i have given up that hope now. if we had gone to Portsmouth i would have had you to come down and spend the Winter with me. but this is such a out of the way place that it is not fit hardly for a woman to live. but Dear Maggie keep up your heart i will not be away from you always there is lots of happyness in store for us yet.
Dear Wife i must now close Give my love to Mother Jane and all the family
My Best Love to you
i am as Ever
Your Affectionate Husband
