Camp Hamilton

February 12 to March 7, 1862

February 12th, 1862
She is taking a room of her own and will be boss of her "own shanty". He hopes to live to be with his "industrious" wife.

He has sent a likeness but the machine that made it was not very good.

He has had a dream of her but woke to Roll and stable call - "horse of another color".

February 17th, 1862
The regiment advanced to Big Bethel through burned out territory. They see Rebel pickets who ran through the woods. So they turned back as it was raining in torrents. He was wet to skin by freezing rain when they got back to camp and they looked like a pack of drowned rats.

His thoughts of her cheer him up and his pleased with her conduct.

February 21st, 1862
He thinks the Rebels are surrounded and there will be "fun" at Yorktown soon.

He was promoted from Corporal to Sergeant by a new Captain.

Her brother William was also promoted - now a Corporal.

February 27th, 1862
He took 12 men on scout for 24 hours through ruined farms and to Hampton. One house had an old woman and two girls in it.

It was his first hunt after Rebels on his own "hook" and he would like to take some Rebel prisoners.

He hopes to enjoy the comfort she has now.

No pay yet.

He thought the war would be over by now when he enlisted last summer.

She feels lonesome but when he does come home she will cease this as he will be plenty of company for her. They will have happiness to pay up for all that they have lost.

Very cold, no pay.

He wants her to take good care of herself as she is expecting. His own health has been good.

His father has moved to Philadelphia. Trade is slow.

He asks her to send him some stamps since he can't get them.
