August 5th, 1863. Near Portsmouth, VA
They have moved and he adds a P.S. to the previous letter and mails them together. He has been paid and will send money.

August 8th, 1863. Near Portsmouth, VA
He entrusted his captain to send $25 to her but he got drunk and forgot to send it. He is sending it with this letter.

August 14th, 1863. On Picket at Deep Creek, VA
A short letter written in ink so bad he can hardly make a mark.

He will be on picket another week and will write again when he returns to camp.

August 19th, 1863. Portsmouth, VA
He hopes that God will bless them both with good Health that they may be able to meet again and have a long and Happy life together.

Brother William is well and is trying to get a furlough and he wishes him better luck than he had trying to get a furlough.

He thinks Charleston will fall before long.

September 6th, 1863. South Mills, NC
They have been scouting the country from the Blackwater in Virginia to the Chowan River in North Carolina. Their business has been to hunt Guerillas and Rebels on the Blackwater and they attacked the Guerillas Headquarters near Landy Cross Roads, N.C., taking all arms and ammunition, and those they didn't capture they drove into the dismal swamp

They may stay in South Mills for a while until they break up the bands of Guerillas which abound in this country.
