My Dear Wife

This is the first chance i have had of writing since i wrote my last letter.  i received your letter of the 27 Sept.  i was very glad to hear that you are still injoying good health as this leaves me at present  we have had a rough time of it since we have been out on this Expedition  the wether has been very bad  rainy and wet and we have had a fight or skermish Evryday since we have been out.  i have had several narrow chances of being hurt  we had a pretty sharp skermish on Sunday afternoon last  i had three Bullet holes put through my coat but none of them hurt my skin.  as long as they do nothing but tare my clothes i am safe.

i have no news to add and not much time to write so will have to close hoping that this will find you and Lizzie injoying the best of health

We are on the North Side of the James River operating against Richmond  we are now in sight of the Steaples and Church spires of the city.  but it is hard to tell when we shall be able to walk in as Masters.

Give my Love to all the family

My Very Best Love to you
i am as Ever
Your Affectionate Husband
Will Lancaster

P.S.  the Kiss you Sent me is Very Exceptable  i wish i was where i could have a good kiss from you.  there is not much show of winter quarters yet.  it is hard to tell when i will have that log house of yours done.  but we will get through our fighting Sometime and then i will have a chance to build
Yours truly
William Lancaster
