My Dear Wife

i received your letter on Friday and i was glad to hear that you and the child are still injoying good health as this leaves me at present

i would a wrote as soon as i received the letter but i have been out on a scout ever since i received it and i just come back last night

i have no news to send  everything about hear continue quiete at present but i believe Gen McClellen has been giving the Rebels a bit of a thrashing on the upper Potomic which is good news for us  if he only will follow them up and not give them time to form them togather  and i think that there will be some change of bringing the war to a close yet before long  but there is so many changes that one dont know what to expect next.

We at Suffolk have been prepared for a fight this last week  the Rebels have a notion to take Suffolk from us  last wedensday it was reported that nine thousand was coming to attack us  we got ready for them but they did not come  and i guess it is good for them that they did not come

Since then our company has been out Scouting near Carrsville to the Blackwater and we arrived home in camp last night pretty well tired out  but we are all safe and sound yet which i hope we will continue to be

i spoke to your brother William about writing to your mother  he wrote to her on Last Friday right before we started on the Scout  he is well and injoying good health  we are expecting Pay Day to come pretty soon  we was musterd in for Pay on the last of Aug  so we are now looking out for the Pay

When you write again Please send me a few Postage Stamps for i have no more nor no money will buy any at this place  Postage Stamps dont make money enough for the Suttler to sell  the law makes them sell them at 3 cts apiece and there is no profit for them you see

i have no more to say at present  i hope this letter will find you still injoying good health and that Lizzie is doing well

Give my respects to all of the family and all inquiring Friends

And with my Best Love for You
i am Your Affectionate Husband
William Lancaster
