My Dear Wife

i received your kind and ever welcome letter on Sunday and i was very glad to hear that you was still injoying good health as this leaves me at present

everything about here goes on as usal  everything is quiete at present and i think it is quite likely that we shall stop here this winter  it is begening to get quite cold at nights  evry morning the Ground is coverd with frost

Dear Maggie  it is just about 1 year since you came to Washington to see me when i was sick and it seems to me as if it was 3 years insted of one  time passes so slow with me in the Army  but i do hope that it will not be a nother year until i shall come home to see you

i would like very much to see this war come to a close for i do not see what is to be gained by fighting  only loosing life for nothing  when i first listed i thought i was going to fight for the Union but now i dont know what i am fighting for nor i dont think anybody knows what we are fighting for

i have not much news to send  i am glad that Lizzie is doing so well  i hope she will continue to grow and be good. we have not received our pay yet and i dont expect that we shall be payed until the tenth of next month when we will receive 4 month pay  so you see it will rather long a coming  but it will be all right when it does come

i must now close  Give My very best Respects to Your Mother   Jane and all the family and all inquiring Friends

My Very best Love to You
i am Your Affectionate Husband
