Portsmouth Va April 12th 1864

My Dear Wife

We have had a buissy time since i last wrote  the day after i wrote the last letter we left Williamsburg for Newport News and from there we to transports for Portsmouth and here we are camped in our old camp which we occiped before we went to Williamsburg  the weather was vary Disagreble during our move for it rained all the time and i cannot Discribe the condition of the roads for they was in such a bad condition

in my last letter i wrote to you to send me 75 Dollars.  Since then a Friend of mine would have me except the loan of $100. which i Excepted and if you have not already sent the money do not send it for i can get along very well without it.  but if you have sent it it will be safe and i will send it back to you with interest.  if we stay at Portsmouth any length of time i will have some pictures taken for Jane Alla and you

Dear Maggie  i have no news to send you  i like my new Position Very well  it is a grate deal better then being in the Ranks  in fact i am quite a Gentleman now

i must now close  Give my Love to all the Family and Remember me to Lizzie
