My Dear Wife
I received your letter just now and I will answer it right away i am glad to hear that you are all well as it leaves me the same in the letter you sent me there was one dollar note and i guess that before you get this letter your mother will have received some money from your Brother William for we received two months pay last Tuesday i was going to send nine home to you but I expect to get a furlough to come to Philadelphia about Christmas I asked the Captain for to get me one for to go home at Christmas and i think i will succeed in getting one and if i do i will be able to spend 10 or 15 days at home with you at Christmas i will try to get it so that I can be home before Christmas there is only two men allowed in a Company allowed furlough at the same time two of our men get furloughs to go home on the 5th of this month and as soon as they are back i expect to get mine though i cannot promise for sure that i can get one but i think that i will if nothing turn up to the contrary but you may bett that if there is one to be got that i will get it dont say anything to any of the folks about it and when i get my furlough for sure i will write and let you know
So Maggie we may
be able to spend a merry Christmas together yet at any rate i will live
in hopes that we will
i think that a trip at home will do me no harm
i have no news to send you we are still encamped in the same places as
when i last wrote. the weather is getting very cold last tuesday morning
we had a very severe snow storm and after the snow it commenced to rain and
freeze and you can guess what a pleasant thing that would be with stiff North
East wind Blowing of the Sea all the time but the weather has got a little
warmer since which has made plenty of mud for us i dont know that i have
any thing more to say at present give my respects to all the family
Cousins Sarah Dyson and all inquiring friends
and with my best love for you
