My Dear Wife

i write to inform you that i have just returned to camp  our company has been out for two weeks.  i received your kind letter one week ago but i had no chance to answer it until today  i also received the telagreph Dispatch you sent me about my Brother being Dead at home  but being out on a Scout for two weeks i could not Possabely get home in time to see him  i got a Furlough wrote out this morning and the Colonel sighned it for me  and it has to go to Fortress Monroe to be sighned by Gen. Dix  and if Gen Dix will sighn my Furlough i will be home in about six or eight days  if he dont sighn it of course i cannot come home  but i think he will sighn it  at least i hope so.

Dear Wife  i cannot tell you how supprised i was when i received the Despatch from you saying that John was Dead  for i had not the least idea that he was wounded so serious.  but we will have to put up with the loss  i hope he is gone to a Better place where there is no more war nor Bloodshed  but where everything is Peace and Happyness.

Dear Wife  i have no news to send you  only i have had a pretty rough time of it this last two weeks  i hope i will get my Furlough sighned and then i will have the happyness of meeting you and our child  i have no more to add at present  Give my love to all the Family

My Very Best Love to You My Dear Wife

i remain as Ever
Your Affectionate Husband
William Lancaster
