Mrs Lancaster

Sad as the duty is, it must be performed. And I must inform you that your beloved husband is no more. He was killed while gallantly leading a charge on the 1st of April. I would have written sooner but that there was no opportunity to send any mail. In his death the regiment met a deep loss. I loved and esteemed him as a brother and always felt that he was a warm friend of mine. And long ago he gave me your address so that I might write to you in case of his death.

Great as the loss is it is not so great to any other beside yourself. I deeply lament his loss but it is over now and cannot be recalled.

All his things are in my possession and as soon as there is an opportunity to send them safely to you I will do so. He had fifty two dollars in money. A watch and a valise that I have at present. And as for his dress clothes I rather think that he packed them and sent them to Norfolk, Va. as did the other officers. I will send them as soon as I can get them. Your husband was decently buried.

If you wish to write, address
