Camp Hdq 11th Pa Cavalry  April 20

Mrs Wm Lancaster

Dear Friend

I received your letter this morning inquiring after your husband Capt Lancaster.

I would have written to you long ago if I could have found out the particulars of his Death.

But I was left in Camp in charge of the dismounted men and could not find out anything of them

A few days ago Major Monroe's orderly came back with his horse and gave me the arms report of the Company --- He says that William was Killed Instantly while leading the Company in a Charge and that he was Buried near where he fell  He knows the Place.  He says all William said after he was shot was (Boys .  Save me from the hands of the Rebels.)  he also says that one of the men have got all his Private Property.  If they have I will send it to you as soon as I can get to the Company.

He says that William's Horse after he fell from him went on into the Enemies lines taking his Equipment --- Overcoat  Blanket  etc.  Before he left Camp he sent nearly all his things home.  Saving only what cloths he wanted to take with him.

He seemed to feel very sad after he came Back from the Furlough and he told me when he went Home again he was going to Stay.

Any more information that you want I will give with Pleasure for I feal as though I had lost a Brother for I cant Realize that he is Dead

I have nothing more to write this time  Hoping I may hear from you soon

I remain as Ever Your Friend

I will say for William if there ever was a good man & a Brave man I felt he was one.  If there is a Heaven for anyone I Believe he was Prepared to go.

Give thanks Dear Wife that he was not taken Prisoner
